8 students injured in CMS bus wreck

Eight students were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries after an SUV driver ran a red light and smashed into their Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus on Thursday morning, police said.

The bus, No. 704, serves John Morehead Stem Academy, CMS spokeswoman Yaviri Escalera said. Both drivers also were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The wreck happened at about 8:10 a.m. at The Plaza and Barrington Drive in east Charlotte.

Police said Shaquilla Miller, 29, was driving a 2002 Cadillac Escalade eastbound in the left turn lane on The Plaza when she failed to stop for the red light. The front of the Escalade hit the left front side of the bus, which was southbound on Barrington Drive, police said.

The bus went off the right side of Barrington Drive and hit two trees. The Escalade caught fire after the wreck, police said.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the collision and ask that anyone who saw the wreck call police Detective Matthew Sammis at 704-336-8862 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
