An elderly man who police say was accidentally run over by his wife near a home in west Charlotte died from his injuries, according to his family.

The accident occurred in the 5800 block of Tuckaseegee Road Tuesday morning. The victim’s son told WBTV that Edsel Barbee was opening the gate for his wife when she accidentally struck him.

According to Medic, Barbee was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. His family confirmed to WBTV that Barbee had died.

He and his wife were married for about 60 years.

A neighbor said she talked to Barbee’s wife soon after the accident. The neighbor said the wife was shaken up after the accident and that she told her she was unable to see her husband.

Barbee’s son told WBTV his father would always open the gate for his wife to leave the driveway.

He said his father recently had a few health issues, and described Barbee as a great family man.

Several neighbors were sad to hear about the accident.

“They’re married. They’re just good people,” Larry Sutton said. “It’s just sad that something like that can happen.”

The family is all too familiar with tragedy, as the couple lost a son in a motorcycle wreck several years ago.

“I just hope and pray that everything comes out OK,” Sutton said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police stayed at the house taking pictures and marking the accident scene until after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
