Iredell deputies kill suspected bank robber
Iredell County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a bank robbery suspect Friday night after he fired a shot at them in woods near Union Grove, said Maj. Todd Carver.
Authorities received a bank alarm about 5 p.m. Friday from the Capital Bank at 1439 W. Memorial Highway in Union Grove, in northern Iredell County, Carver said.
“We were told the suspect presented a note stating he was armed,” Carver said. “He was last seen running from the bank.”
The sheriff’s department’s K-9 unit responded within minutes and began tracking the suspect. Two hours later, they found him in woods, down a ravine near a creek. He was about a mile from the bank.
The deputies tried to coax him out of the woods and surrender. He didn’t. So they went in after him and the suspect fired at least once at the deputies, Carver said. “During an exchange of gunfire, the suspect was killed,” he said.
Carver didn’t have names of the suspect or deputies. The SBI is investigating the shooting.
