Gastonia firemen rescue fallen worker from hole

The Gastonia Fire Department reported it responded to a call of a person trapped underground at 128 West Main Avenue at a construction site on Tuesday afternoon.

A 59-year old-male construction worker fell approximately 12 feet into a hole leading into the basement of the old Lawyers building, the department reported.

The department’s rescue team used a ladder truck and harnessing devices to lower a stokes basket into the hole. Rescuers in the hole treated the patient and secured him in a stokes basket to be raised out of danger.

The ladder truck lifted the patient to other awaiting Gaston EMS personnel who transported the patient to the hospital. The patient suffered multiple injuries to his extremities, none appeared life threatening, according to the department.
