Investigators are trying to determine whether a fire that ripped through the old Hildebran High last week was due to an electrical issue or arson.
“We can’t eliminate an electrical fire because the building did have electricity, and we can’t eliminate a fire started by human hands,” Burke County Fire Marshal Mike Long said at a Hildebran Town Council meeting Friday night.
Long said the investigation is on hold because the building is so unstable.
Charred brick and warped pieces of wood are nearly all that’s left, a sight resident Sonya Scott can’t force herself to drive by. “I went to school there. My mother and father went to school there,” Scott said.

“I cried,” resident Vivian Wilson said. “And I cried a lot more when I came out and saw the destruction.”
