Pat Conroy made Charlotte area appearances over the years

Over the years, Pat Conroy made a number of appearances in the Charlotte area.

Some of the more notable:

2000: Appears at Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Visiting Writers Series in Hickory.

1998: Speaks to a sold-out crowd at Ovens Auditorium, as part of the Novello Festival of Reading sponsored by the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County.

1995: Signs 2,000 copies of “Beach Music” at Little Professor bookstore in Park Road Shopping Center. Conroy stayed 6 1/2 hours at the store, now Park Road Books, to accommodate a line of fans down to the old A&P store.

1989: This one wasn’t a visit, but a New Year’s Resolution by Conroy with a Charlotte tie: To sell the screenplay he wrote with former Charlotte Observer editorial cartoonist Doug Marlette called “Ex.”

“Doug and I got together and started trading all the hideous stories we’d ever heard and about ex-wives and ex-husbands, and we poured it all into one screenplay, which is now making the rounds in Hollywood,” Conroy told the Observer’s Dannye Romine Powell at the time.

It’s unclear what came of the screenplay. Marlette died in a pickup truck wreck in Mississippi in 2007.

1987: Delivers the address at Belmont Abbey College’s commencement exercises. Conroy received an honorary degree from the Belmont college.
