Eugene “Gene” Cochrane Jr., president of The Duke Endowment, was honored Friday with the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.
Cochrane received the award in front of hundreds of nonprofit leaders at the 2016 South Carolina Nonprofit Summit in Spartanburg.
The award was given there because of the endowment’s significant support to South Carolina nonprofits over the years and to thank Cochrane for his philanthropic leadership.
The Charlotte-based endowment has awarded at least $3.2 billion in grants across the Carolinas.
