Walter G. Byers School safely evacuated after fire

All students and staff at Walter G. Byers School were safely evacuated after a fire in a bathroom at the school Friday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said.

Police said the fire was intentionally set, according to WBTV, the Observer’s media partner.

Walter G. Byers is a K-8 school on Hamilton Street in north Charlotte.

No students were allowed to return to the school building Friday, CMS announced.

Teachers called parents to pick up their elementary school children at the school bus lot and their middle school children at Charlotte Greenville Center at 1330 Spring St. Parents should have their identification ready.

Parents also can have their children take district transportation home.

Any parents who haven’t been contacted by their child’s teacher should call the school front office at 980-343-6940.

“Please understand that phone lines may be busy when you call, so please be patient,” CMS said in a message alert. “The safety of our students is our top priority, and no child will be sent home on a bus until the parent or caregiver has been contacted.”
