Two pit bulls that mauled an 84-year-old woman to death in south Charlotte were euthanized Thursday morning, police said.

Bessie Flowers was bitten by the dogs March 28 while apparently visiting a younger relative in a townhouse on Luke Crossing Drive in the Springs Valley subdivision, near the Arboretum shopping center.

On Wednesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care & Control Division obtained legal documents signing over ownership rights on the dogs to Animal Care & Control.

The dogs completed their 10-day rabies quarantine Thursday and were humanely euthanized, according to an Animal Care & Control news release.

Police said their investigation has been closed, and no charges will be filed.

The dogs had been properly licensed and vaccinated, police said shortly after the incident.

Animal Care & Control officers had responded to a previous call at the townhouse in April 2013 in reference to a complaint of two aggressive animals. The call was unsubstantiated, and police said they received no other calls at the address until the March 28 incident.
