Firefighters credit a family’s dogs with helping the family escape a house fire in Kannapolis late Thursday.

The dogs alerted the family even before smoke alarms sounded in the house on Wind Song Court in the Remmington Estates neighborhood off South Main Street, according to the Kannapolis Fire Department.

Firefighters found fire and smoke coming from the attic when they responded about 11:40 p.m. The family was outside when firefighters arrived, and no one was injured.

The fire started in a charcoal grill on the back deck, fire officials said. The grill had been used earlier in the evening.
