The superintendent of Newberry County Schools died in a weekend traffic collision that also involved a sheriff’s deputy.

Bennie D. Bennett, 56, of Prosperity died at the scene of the Saturday night accident from his injuries, Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton said in a news release.

The collision occurred at 6:26 p.m. on S.C. 219 near Newberry High School, the news release said. The collision also involved a Newberry County Sheriff's deputy. The name of the deputy and his condition were not known Sunday.

The S.C. Highway Patrol and the Coroner’s Office are investigating the accident. Other details about the accident were not immediately available.

Bennett was ejected from his vehicle and died immediately at the scene, Chief Deputy Coroner Lewis Lee said in a statement.

Bennett was the Newberry County Schools chief for 10 years, Newton said, and he leaves a wife and two children.
