Pedestrian killed on Freedom Drive

A pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday on Freedom Drive near Interstate 85 in west Charlotte.

Reginald Clark, 54, attempted to cross Freedom Drive and stepped off the curb into traffic, according to a report from Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

A 2007 Honda Odyssey van was traveling southeast on Freedom in the right lane when it struck Clark, the report said.

The driver of the van, Paul Anderson III, 64, applied the brakes but was not able to avoid striking Clark, the report said. Clark died at the scene.

Clark was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk or at an intersection when he was struck. Drugs, alcohol and excessive speed are not suspected as contributing factors in the crash.

An investigation is continuing at CMPD.
