A 13-year-old boy riding his bike died in a collision with an SUV in the 1900 block of Remount Road on Saturday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The boy was riding behind a car in the southbound lane about 12:30 p.m. and turned left in front of the northbound 2008 Ford Explorer, police said.

Medic took the boy to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m.

Family members confirmed to WBTV that the boy was Jabbar Gatewood Jr., who was known by many as J.J. They said he was coming home from Walmart.

Neither speed nor alcohol factored into the wreck, police said.

Police said they arrested the driver, Benjamin Ceasar McPherson, 47, for not having a valid N.C. operator’s license.

Police continue to investigate the wreck and ask that any witnesses call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or CMPD Detective Steve Williams at 704-432-2169.
