State inmate from Iredell County dies of apparent suicide

A state inmate from Iredell County died of an apparent suicide at Central Prison in Raleigh this week, state prison officials said.

Steven Haas, 39, was found unresponsive in his cell just before midnight Wednesday, said Keith Acree, spokesman for the N.C. Department of Public Safety. Haas was declared dead at Central Prison’s medical center a short time later.

The State Capitol Police Department is investigating the death, Acree said.

Haas, 39, had recently completed a seven-to-10-year sentence for convictions in Iredell County for second-degree sexual assault and indecent liberties with a child, Acree said.

He was released from prison onto post-release supervision April 8 but returned to prison May 2 after a violation of post-release supervision.
