Woman hit, killed on I-85 in Rowan County
A woman was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85 in Rowan County Thursday morning, closing the northbound lanes for hours.
The State Highway Patrol said the wreck happened around 5:15 a.m. at Exit 74, Julian Road, in Salisbury.
The woman was in a Buick when the car became disabled. Troopers said the woman left the car, and that’s when a tractor-trailer hit the Buick and the woman. The woman, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead on scene.
Master Trooper Ned Moultrie said the tractor-trailer and Buick traveled several hundred feet before catching fire. The truck driver escaped unharmed.
“Certainly, you don’t want to exit the vehicle on the interstate, because, that’s just, uh, it’s not gonna have a good consequence,” Moultrie said.
Moultrie said if your vehicle becomes disabled, try to get it off the road and steer it to the shoulder before calling 911.
