A wreck is blocking the left and left-center lanes of Interstate 85 southbound near W.T. Harris Boulevard Thursday morning.

The wreck happened about 7:40 a.m. It could take an hour to clear the scene, state highway officials said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were at numerous other wrecks at 7:45 a.m., including two injury wrecks in west Charlotte – on Moores Chapel Road at Rhyne Road and on Moorebrook Drive at Belmeade Drive.

Another injury wreck was reported on North Graham Street at West Fifth Street.

Police also were at wrecks on East Independence Boulevard at Hawthorne Lane and on John Belk Freeway at South Church Street.

About 1 a.m. Thursday, a driver was hospitalized in critical condition after he lost control of his speeding car around a curve on Harwood Lane near Riverside Drive in western Mecklenburg County, Observer news partner WBTV reported. The car hit trees and went down an embankment, the station reported.

In Burke County, a passenger died and the driver was critically injured in an apparently alcohol-related, single-vehicle wreck on Hartland Road early Thursday, WBTV reported. State Highway Patrol troopers identified the passenger as Richard Church, 54, and the driver as Leon Creasy, 28.
