Authorities identify woman who died after Lake Norman rescue
A Charlotte woman who was rescued from Lake Norman Sunday after about 10 minutes under water has died.
Shakira Varner, 27, of Charlotte, and another woman were on a private dock when Varner fell into the water and did not resurface, according to a report from Cornelius Police.
A team of first responders was called to the 21000 block of Island Forest Drive around 5:17 p.m. to assist.
Cornelius Police, Cornelius-Lemley Fire & Rescue, Huntersville Fire, N.C Wildlife and MEDIC responded and located Varner at the bottom of Lake Norman.
She was taken to CMC Huntersville and was pronounced dead at 6:39 p.m. The incident is still under investigation.
Huntersville Fire Department posted a tweet that said the woman was recovered after about 10 minutes in the water.
It was the third death at Lake Norman in about a week.
The other two victims were Capt. Bradley Long and Isia Cruz, a 29-year-old swimmer who went missing Sunday. Long, a rescue diver, died Monday while searching for the body of Isia Cruz in Lake Norman.
