One person was killed Wednesday after a pickup truck slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 near Rock Hill, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just before 11 a.m. on I-77 north near mile marker 73, according to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller, a Highway Patrol spokesman.

A northbound tractor-trailer was stopped for traffic when a northbound Chevrolet pickup slammed into the back of the 18-wheeler, Miller said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The driver of the pickup was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and later died, Miller said.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the York County Coroner’s Office once the family has been notified.

This is the second fatal crash in York County this week and the fifth one this month.
