Civil rights champion James Ferguson wins The Charlotte Post Luminary Award
James Ferguson II, a Charlotte lawyer who has championed civil rights and educational equality for a half century, is The Charlotte Post Foundation’s “Luminary – Lifetime Achievement” award winner for 2016.
Ferguson helped Julius Chambers found the first integrated law firm in North Carolina in the late 1960s and continues advocating for justice as head of the firm Ferguson Chambers & Sumter.
“I just want to feel that I’ve done all I can do to bring about equality – for everybody,” Ferguson said. “That’s what life is about – trying to create the society we think we want.”
Ferguson will be honored at the 20th “Post Best” banquet on Oct. 8 at the Hilton Center City. The theme is “20 Years of ‘The Best’ – Discovering, Presenting, Supporting Excellence in the Charlotte community since 1996.”
