Blood drive to benefit 'Playground for Zahra'

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will be hosting a blood drive to benefit the "Playground for Zahra" project on Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The drive will be held in the Heart Center Lobby at Frye Regional Medical Center located at 420 North Center St. in Hickory.

For every unit of blood donated, the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will donate $10 to the project fund.

"By giving blood at this special blood drive, donors not only have the chance to support local patients battling cancer, cardiac disease and other life threatening illness, they also have the opportunity to build a playground for children in our community in honor of Zahra Baker," said Martin Grable, president and CEO of Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.

Through fundraisers, the community is hoping to generate the $85,000 needed to build the memorial playground. The play area will be located at 805 6th St., SE in Hickory.

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is partnering with Kiwanis Clubs in Catawba County to lead the event.
