No injuries in Gastonia plant fire

No injuries or major damage was reported Tuesday night in a Gastonia industrial fire.

Fire officials said they were called shortly after 9:30 p.m. to the Firestone plant in the 300 block of South Dalton Street. When firefighters arrived, they reported seeing flames coming from one of the chimneys atop the seven-story commercial building.

A crew of 25 firefighters responded, with some firefighters climbing the stairs and putting out the flames in about 20 minutes. Several employees in the building were evacuated.

The Firestone facility is near – but not part of – the historic Loray Mill, now being converted to residential and commercial use.

Officials said the blaze started when pieces of insulation surrounding the chimney ignited, which caused debris inside the chimney to catch fire.
