Duke Energy has been granted a 30-year license renewal for its Keowee-Toxaway hydro project in northwestern South Carolina.

The project begins with Lake Jocassee on the North Carolina-South Carolina line, then flows into Lake Keowee and the Army Corps of Engineers’ Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.

It spans 25 river miles, supports two hydroelectric power plants and provides cooling water for Duke’s Oconee nuclear plant on Lake Keowee.

The new license takes effect Sept. 1. Duke agreed to improve lake recreation areas and protect 2,900 acres of land adjoining the lakes.

Last year Duke won 40-year licenses for its 225-mile Catawba River hydro project near Charlotte and its Yadkin project east of Charlotte.
