1 killed in east-Charlotte shooting

A man was shot in the parking lot of an east-Charlotte apartment complex late Sunday and later pronounced dead.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police hadn't released the man's name late Sunday, pending notification of the family.

Police were called to Pepper Tree apartments about 8 p.m. Sunday by a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. The apartments are just off Central Avenue near Eastway Drive. When officers arrived, they discovered the victim lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.

He was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation was still being conducted late Sunday. Investigators could be seen taking statements from witnesses and using flashlights to scour the ground near the parking lot for evidence.

Police encourage anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters are eligible for a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
