Harrisburg man arrested in rape of Kannapolis woman

Police have arrested and charged a Harrisburg man in the rape of a woman in her Kannapolis home.

Vurnel Lee Smith Jr., 38, was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree forcible sexual offense. He was jailed on $250,000 bail.

Kannapolis police said they interviewed the victim Sunday at CMC-NorthEast in Concord, where she was being treated after the assault and was listed in stable condition.

Police said the victim told them that Smith, an acquaintance, broke into her home and sexually assaulted her.

Police said they arrested Smith without incident at a Charlotte apartment complex. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police assisted in the arrest.
