Report: Elderly woman attacked during carjacking at Harris Teeter
An elderly woman was assaulted and robbed and a store employee run over during a carjacking at a Charlotte grocery store Tuesday, police said.
The incident happened just before 11:30 a.m. at the Harris Teeter on Sharon Amity Road, in the Cotswold Shopping Center.
Police said late Tuesday that they arrested Scottie Barringer, 34, in connection with the robbery.
The victim, an 83-year-old woman, told officers she was “punched to the ground” by a man who then took $40 and her car keys. A store employee stepped in to help, according to the report.
The employee told WBTV he heard a woman screaming, ran over and saw the attacker “wailing” on the elderly woman. He said he jumped in and the robber turned on him, punching and biting him.
The attacker then got into the woman’s 2006 silver Toyota Corolla, drove over the employee and took off.
The woman and the store employee were both taken to a local hospital. The woman has a broken hip and the man was released.
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
