Cornelius police warn of phone scam

Cornelius police are warning residents and business owners of a recent phone scam.

A business owner reported receiving a call from a supposed representative of Duke Energy saying the business had past-due balances, police said.

The caller asked the victim to buy a Green Dot Card for the past due amount or the Cornelius Police Department and the caller would go to the business and disconnect its power, police said.

Anyone who receives such a call should try to write down the caller’s phone number and alert Cornelius police at 704-892-7773.
