Gang member arrested in Rowan County on weapons and drug charges

A Salisbury man who authorities said is a known gang member with a felony drug record in California was arrested Thursday on possession and sale of drug charges.

Rowan County sheriff’s investigators said Kristopher Steven Maldonado, 24, also was charged with misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was jailed on $50,000 bail.

The firearm charges stem from an incident at the home of Maldonado’s parents, investigators said.

Investigators accuse Maldonado of using a 12-gauge shotgun to threaten his parents over money and other possessions. Maldonado’s father wrestled the shotgun from his son, investigators said.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Maldonado and seized the shotgun as evidence. Deputies found Maldonado disoriented and learned he’d swallowed a large number of pills.

EMS took Maldonado to Rowan Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was later jailed.
