Driver sought in fatal I-40 hit and run near Statesville

A female passenger on a motorcycle died after being hit by a driver who left the scene on westbound Interstate 40 near Statesville on Thursday afternoon, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

A man driving the motorcycle was in critical condition, according to the station.

Troopers are searching for a white 2007 Toyota Sienna towing an aluminum trailer with N.C. tag ZZR-9037, according to WBTV. The Sienna was last seen on Interstate 77 northbound from Statesville, the State Highway Patrol said.

The Sienna’s driver hit the motorcycle at about 4:15 p.m. at mile marker 158, WBTV reported.

The State Highway Patrol has not released the names and ages of the motorcycle driver and his passenger.
