A Pineville police officer on his way to help a fellow officer on a traffic stop was struck in his vehicle and injured by another driver late Saturday.
The officer, Taylor Whitley, had only minor injuries in the crash, which occurred about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Whitley was at the intersection of Lancaster Highway and Lullingstone Road with his lights and siren on as he approached the scene of the DWI stop.
A vehicle that wasn’t involved in the DWI stop struck the front passenger side of Whitley’s patrol car. The crash pushed Whitley’s cruiser onto the curb, where it struck another vehicle, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were investigating Whitley’s wreck and had not released the name of the other driver involved in it late Sunday. Pineville police say charges were pending against that driver.
The man who had been stopped on suspicion of DWI, Dorian Antwoinne Cox, was pulled over because he was driving with no headlights on Lancaster Highway toward the Ballantyne area.
He was charged with DWI, felony fleeing to elude and careless and reckless driving.
Cox was not involved in Whitley’s wreck and was not injured.
