Condo fire under control in university area

The Charlotte Fire Department said it took 27 firefighters 15 minutes to get a Friday morning condominium fire under control in a university area complex.

There were no injuries.

The fire was reported at 10659 Hill Point Court off N. Tryon Street near W. Mallard Creek Church Road at the Hyde Park Condominiums, according to the fire department. The call came in at 5:39 a.m.

Improperly discarded smoking materials caused the fire on the balcony, the department said, adding that smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths.
