Police: Subject in killing of woman shoots himself

A man who police believe fatally shot a woman in east Charlotte Sunday morning was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside an apartment a few hours later.

Police identified the dead woman as Alisa Mackey, 29. The man they believe killed her was identified as Cameron Phillips, 27.

Phillips was found dead after police surrounded his apartment and spent several hours trying to get him to surrender.

Several people called 911 about 11 a.m., saying they heard gunshots coming from an apartment on Perth Court, said Capt. Rob Dance, who oversees the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s North Tryon division.

“The 911 caller stated they heard shots coming from inside an apartment and saw an armed male in the parking lot,” a police statement said.

When they arrived, they found Mackey suffering from an appartent gunshot wound. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Officers determined Mackey and Phillips knew each other and this was not a random act of violence, police said.

When officers saw Phillips’s vehicle near an apartment on John Penn Circle, they requested additional units, with members of the SWAT team and negotatiors establishing a perimeter. SWAT officers ultimately entered the apartment, which is when they found Phillips dead.

Several hours after Phillips was found dead, CMPD continued to search for a woman identified as Latrisha Nicole Blackwood, 30. Police said she may have information on the whereabouts of a family member of the suspect.

She was ultimately found and interviewed, according to a police statement sent at 4:33 a.m.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective. Detective Rooks is the lead detective assigned to the case.
