A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting as deputies attempted to serve a search warrant inside a home in Boiling Springs, S.C., on Thursday morning, according to the Spartanburg Herald Journal.
The newspaper identified the man as 28-year-old Phillip Michael Burgess, of 477 Belcher Road.
Boiling Springs is about 75 miles southwest of Charlotte.
A Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office spokesman told the newspaper that narcotics officers went to the home on Belcher Road to serve a search warrant shortly before 10 a.m. Burgess “became belligerent,” the spokesman said, and the officers called for backup. Two traffic officers responded and Burgess, who was still agitated, grabbed a gun from above his refrigerator and pointed it at the traffic deputies.
Two officers fired their guns, killing Burgess. The officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation. Both the officers and the suspect are white.
