A driver in a stolen rental truck poured gasoline on himself as an officer approached, leading to a standoff south of Hickory on Monday afternoon, media outlets reported.

A SWAT team pulled the man from the truck after the hour-long standoff in the town of Brookford, but not before police evacuated nearby homes, according to media reports. No one was injured.

Officers pulled the driver over at about noon on South Center Street, Observer news partner WBTV reported. The truck was stolen from Burke County, according to the station.

WSOC-TV said the man was driving a stolen Ryder rental truck.

Police took the man to be evaluated at a hospital, and charges had yet to be filed Monday afternoon.
