Deadly shooting near West Charlotte High put school on lockdown

A man was shot and killed near West Charlotte High School on Thursday, but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the shooting was not connected to the school.

The high school went on lockdown because of the gunfire nearby, but the lockdown was lifted less than an hour after the shooting, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

The shooting happened on the 2400 block of Kendall Drive, police said, and the victim died at the scene. His name has not been released.

Local TV reporters saw evidence that several shots were fired, including some that hit a nearby SUV. Fox 46 Charlotte reported that bullets hit two houses.

No one has been arrested yet in this case. Homicide detectives are still figuring out if there are any witnesses, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
