A Gastonia man has been arrested in what Belmont’s acting police chief called the savage beating of another man with a brick at a boat landing off Wilkinson Boulevard.
The victim was punched, kicked and struck in the head multiple times with a brick in Tuesday’s attack at Dale’s Boat Landing, Acting Police Chief Basil Marett said. The boat landing is at the Catawba River.
A police dog help officers track down suspect Michael Wayne Upton, 47. He was found hiding in woods near a home on Alice Avenue, Marett said.

After Upton refused to surrender, police used a Taser to take him into custody, Marett said.
Both Upton and the victim were taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia for treatment of injuries. Upton was injured during the assault and scuffle at the boat landing, police said.
Upton will be charged once he’s released from the hospital, police said.
The conditions of Upton and the victim weren’t available Thursday.
