Police say they’ve arrested a 17-year-old suspected of shooting out dozens of car windows with BB guns over the past two weeks.

Zachary Trull has been charged with “numerous damage to property incidents,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a news release.

Investigators have documented 40 incidents where someone shot through vehicle windows using BB guns or airsoft guns since April 1. Police believed the suspects in the case were targeting homes in communities along Harrisburg Road.

Police say they broadcast information to people using nextdoor.com, a social networking service that connects people in a particular neighborhood. Officers also increased patrols in affected areas.

On Wednesday, around 10 p.m., “an alert citizen” notified police that someone was breaking out car windows, and provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle and a license plate number.

Police initiated a traffic stop on that vehicle on Parkton Road, near where Albemarle Road meets Interstate 485, and detained Trull. Inside the car, officers say they found three BB guns and a paintball gun.

Trull was charged with four counts of damage to property and officers say more charges may be coming.

The case remains open and police encourage anyone who may be affected to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters are eligible for rewards for information that leads to an arrest.
