Man shoots himself at scene of 2-car wreck

A man fatally shot himself early Sunday at the scene of a two-car wreck on North Tryon Street as an officer ordered him at gunpoint to drop his weapon.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer had responded to a call about a two-car wreck just before the shooting.

A man with a handgun got out of one of the vehicles when the officer arrived at the scene, near West Mallard Creek Road, around 2:40 a.m., according to CMPD.

The officer drew his weapon and ordered the man to drop his gun, CMPD reported. The man put the gun to his own head and fired. The man’s identity had not been released. Karen Sullivan
