Motorcyclist arrested after trying to elude Burke County authorities

A motorcyclist reached at least 90 mph as he tried to elude Burke County sheriff’s investigators on Friday before wrecking into a patrol car, Sheriff Steve Whisenant said.

Motorcyclist Larry Wayne Nance, 27, of Hickory, was treated for minor injuries after the wreck and charged with felony flee to elude arrest, misdemeanor careless and reckless driving and three counts of felony probation violation.

Nance was jailed in lieu of $55,000 bail.

A female passenger on Nance’s motorcycle was uninjured, Whisenant said.

The incident started about 4:30 p.m. when a blue Honda motorcycle with no license plate passed a sheriff’s detective near the intersection of Ramsey and Rhoney roads.

A traffic stop was initiated on the motorcycle at the intersection of George Hildebrand School Road and N.C. 18. The motorcyclist indicated by a hand motion that he was pulling over onto George Hildebrand School Road, but once on that road reached at least 90 mph trying to elude investigators, Whisenant said.

The chase led to Old Shelby Road, and Nance eventually wrecked into a detective’s patrol car. Nance tried to run away but was soon caught.
