U-Haul leads to arrest in Burke County house break-in

Alert neighbors reported a key piece of evidence that led to the arrest of a 35-year-old Hickory man on charges related to a house break-in in the Hildebran area of Burke County this week: He showed up at the house driving a U-Haul truck.

Sheriff’s detectives gathered information from local U-Haul facilities and found the suspect vehicle, as well as the name of the person who’d recently rented the truck, Sheriff Steve Whisenant said.

Detectives found items stolen from the home at a nearby pawnshop, the sheriff said.

Matthew Robert Outlaw was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, and larceny. He was jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail.
