Woman sentenced for selling stolen items on eBay

A Dallas, Texas, woman who shoplifted items from numerous hobby and craft retail stores in Mecklenburg County and sold them on the Internet was sentenced this week to two years and nine months in prison, Acting U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose announced.

Maria Steele Vera, 60, also must pay about $70,000 in restitution.

Vera shoplifted the items from 2009 to 2013 and listed them for sale on eBay below retail value, prosecutors said. Court records show Vera netted between $400,000 and $1 million.

Vera pleaded guilty in April to wire fraud in connection with her scheme.

According to court records, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at Vera’s home, they recovered 70 plastic crates full of stolen craft and scrap booking products, and 50 flat rate mailing boxes.
