Charlotte woman charged in wreck that injured 7
A Charlotte woman has been charged with five counts of misdemeanor child abuse and one count of reckless driving to endanger, after her mini-van ran off Interstate 85 Thursday morning, injuring seven in her vehicle.
Shondara Harris, 28, told troopers she’d intended to get onto the Brookshire Freeway but came up too fast on it and swerved trying to exit, Trooper John Burgin said Friday night.
Two adults and five children were in the minivan when it ran off the right side of the highway.
The seven were apparently living in the van, Burgin said.
At least one of the occupants, a 10-month-old boy, remained in critical condition Sunday at Carolinas Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
One adult, front-seat passenger Donzel Holland, 39, was discharged from Carolinas Medical Center last week, troopers said. Shondara Harris was discharged Saturday.
No braking or skid marks were found on the highway, State Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Davies said. How fast the van was traveling is still being investigated, he said.
In critical condition Sunday was back-seat passenger Brandon Holland, 10 months.
Conditions weren’t available for back-seat passengers Sara Harris, 4, Shonmirka Smith, 8, and Jaden Harris-Holland, 8 months. Another back-seat passenger, Bernard Smith III, 6, wasn’t listed as being in the hospital Sunday.
