Mooresville man accused of having a moonshine operation at his home

A 27-year-old Mooresville man faces charges in connection with non-tax paid liquor violations after Iredell County sheriff’s investigators said they found 126 quarts of homemade liquor in his home Tuesday.

Investigators went to John Crisp IV’s home in the 900 block of Shearers Road on a tip that marijuana and homemade liquor were being sold there, Sheriff Darren Campbell said Thursday.

Authorities found an active still concealed in a building on the property and several 55-gallon drums of mash used to make moonshine, Campbell said.

Also found were 175 marijuana plants growing on the property, an indoor marijuana growing operation, 773 grams of marijuana and illegal psilocybin mushrooms, the sheriff said.

Crisp was charged with manufacturing marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and alcohol-related offenses.

Marijuana found in Crisp’s bedroom alone had an estimated street value of $4,000 and the liquor an estimated street value of $3,100, the sheriff said.

Crisp was jailed on $15,000 bail.
