South Carolina sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded

Officers in Berkeley County continue the search for a masked man who shot and wounded a sheriff’s deputy.

Sheriff Butch Henerey told local media that Lt. Will Rogers was shot several times at a gas station in Moncks Corner around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Rogers underwent surgery Friday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Hospital spokeswoman Helen Adams said Rogers is in critical but stable condition.

Critical condition means that indicators are unfavorable.

The sheriff said Rogers pulled into the parking lot of a gas station and began talking with a customer when a masked man came from behind the building and shot.

The sheriff says the gunman then hijacked a car, which was found about two hours later.

A sheriff’s spokesman did not immediately return messages Friday

Moncks Corner is about three hours south of Charlotte.
