An 84-year-old Monroe woman on her way to her weekly hairdresser appointment early Friday ran a red light and was hit and killed by a pickup truck, authorities said.

The victim was Geneva Murray Ennis, said N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper John Burgin. The accident happened at 7:20 a.m. on U.S. 601 at Ridge Road, he said.

The road was closed for part of the morning.

Ennis was traveling north, likely at the 55 mph speed limit, when she ran the light, Burgin said. He said Ennis was killed instantly after being struck by the pick-up truck.

Ennis was wearing her seat belt. There will be no charges in the case, Burgin said.

A son of Ennis told troopers his mother was going to get her hair fixed, Burgin said. “That apparently was a Friday morning ritual,” he added.

Ennis was a frequent and welcome presence at Quincy’s Family Steakhouse in Monroe, where her son has worked for many years, owner Rita Cline said.

“She was a wonderful person, always very friendly” Cline said. “Everyone in Union County I think knew her.”
