3 Charlotte women accused of check thefts from Lake Norman area mailboxes

Three Charlotte women have been accused of stealing business and personal checks from mailboxes off Langtree and Brawley School roads at Lake Norman in southern Iredell County.

Between March 7 and 13, checks were removed from multiple mailboxes and deposited into a bank account through an ATM, Sheriff Darren Campbell said. The money was then withdrawn, he said.

Jasmine Diana Tillman, 23, Precious Miracle Sheff, 21, and Toren Nilaja Hemphill, 22, were each charged with six counts of larceny of a chose in action and one count each of misdemeanor larceny.

“Chose in action” is a term referring to a bank note, check or other form of payment of money issued by or drawn on a bank.

Sheff was arrested by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and was released by a magistrate. Tillman was taken to the Iredell County jail on $10,000 bail, and authorities are searching for Hemphill.

Anyone with information on Hemphill’s whereabouts is asked to call the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office at 704-878-3180 or Crime Stoppers at 704-662-1340.
