Man charged after pedestrian was killed on Independence Boulevard Monday night

A man has been charged after he reportedly hit and killed a pedestrian in west Charlotte Monday night, police say.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the deadly crash happened in the 2200 block of East Independence Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. Police say 70-year-old John Adam Wylie was walking on the shoulder of the road when the driver of a 2016 Hyundai Sonata drifted over and struck him.

Officers say the driver, identified as 35-year-old Johnny Lee McCorbin, stopped his vehicle a short distance away from the crash scene. Wylie was pronounced dead on scene, police say.

McCorbin was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main with minor injuries.

Police believe excessive speed is a possible factor in the incident. McCorbin was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

McCorbin was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police say. It is unclear whether the pedestrian was impaired.

The outbound lane of Interstate 277 was shut down for some time as officials investigated the crash. Drivers were able to use Monroe Road or Central Avenue as an alternate route.

McCorbin received a $12,500 bond.
