Man arrested after Uber driver reported she was raped by a passenger

An Uber driver reported she was sexually assaulted in Charlotte over the weekend, and on Monday a man was arrested and charged in connection with the case, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The 31-year-old female Uber driver picked up a man on Albemarle Road before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police said, and he allegedly sexually assaulted her while she was driving.

On North Graham Street near Dalton Avenue, he told her to pull over and raped her, police said. She contacted the police.

Sexual assault detectives identified Jonathan Aquante Neal, 21, as the suspect in the case, police said. He was arrested on an uptown street corner Monday morning.

Neal has been charged with second degree sexual assault, second degree sexual offense and sexual battery, police said.

Neal is a registered sex offender, according to the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry.

According to the registry, he was convicted of kidnapping and sexual battery of a 14-year-old when he was 18, in May 2015.

In that case, he was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl at Mallard Creek High School, around 3:35 p.m. on a Thursday. He was convicted in 2016 and got out of prison in April, according to court records.
