911 call leads police to dying man in common area outside University City apartments

A Charlotte man was killed Nov. 20 in the common area of a University City apartment community off East W.T. Harris Boulevard, according to a press release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

The victim was identified by police the next morning as 22-year-old Kendric Washington.

Investigators got a call about an assault with an deadly weapon at 8:37 p.m. in an apartment community in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive, the police release said. That area is off East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Old Concord Road.

“Upon their arrival, officers located a male in the common area of the apartment complex with an apparent gunshot wound,” said the police release. “CPR was performed, however the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Mecklenburg County jail records show Washington lived in Charlotte.

On Nov. 26, police arrested 25-year-old George Ivan Hayes and charged him with murder, according to CMPD.
