Monroe police seek leads in fatal shooting

Monroe police said they are partnering with the NAACP to find the person who fatally shot Steven Clifton Smith on May 2.

Smith, 28, was shot multiple times in the 300 block of East Green Street and was in critical condition when he was flown by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, police said. He died at the hospital.

“We need anyone in the community who has information regarding this crime to step forward so that the family of Mr. Smith can see justice served and experience closure,” Monroe Police Chief Bryan Gilliard said in a statement Wednesday.

“We appreciate the NAACP’s willingness to partner with us in this process and hope that they will be able to use their influence to draw information and cooperation from those who may have knowledge of this crime,” Gilliard said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Monroe police at 704-282-4700 or Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
