Charlotte man receives life sentence for 2012 murder

A Charlotte man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with a 2012 slaying.

James Stanley Daye, 56, was sentenced in Mecklenburg County Superior Court by Judge Gregory Hayes Thursday. Daye was convicted by a jury of killing Walter Lee Gregory, 37.

Daye and Gregory were acquaintances, officials said.

During an argument in October 2012, Daye said he would kill Gregory if he returned to the condominium complex where Daye lived on Hunting Ridge Lane, prosecutors said.

Gregory returned to the area and Daye fatally shot him in the chest with a rifle, prosecutors said.
